Metro Denver Health and Wellness Commission
In 2006, the health care community, in cooperation with local government and public and private business owners, created the Metro Denver Health and Wellness Commission (MDHWC). The Commission drafted a strategic plan to make metro Denver's population a model for the nation in terms of healthy lifestyles, fitness and general wellness. The goal of the commission is to raise awareness about the importance of active and healthy lifestyles as well as promote metro Denver as a fit community. Though Colorado has the lowest obesity rate among the 50 states, the rising trends in adult and children's diabetes, obesity and other dietary diseases and dysfunctions can be felt even here. The commission seeks to make Denver a launching point for the reversal of national trends that currently point to less healthy Americans and more expensive health care costs.
